Everwell Diagnostics for Efficient Disease Management

Background

In any public health infrastructure, robust case management systems form a vital part throughout the patient journey aiding in decision making as well making sure the right patients are provided attention. The Everwell Hub, one such case management system, is also used to track and provide the best possible care to patients suffering from specific diseases. It is based on the principle that the lifetime of any disease can be divided into 3 main stages:

  • Pre-treatment stage: The patient experiences symptoms and consults a doctor about his condition, ultimately leading to the diagnosis of his disease

  • Treatment stage: After the disease identification, the patient is treated based on the specific treatment protocol of the condition

  • Post-treatment follow-up: The treatment is completed and the disease is cured

Each of these stages again have rules and workflows that guide them but one thing that is common across the stages listed above is the need for diagnostic tests. This could be to diagnose a medical condition the patient is suffering from, to gauge the treatment progress of the patient or to verify that the patient hasn’t relapsed. A robust diagnostic module is the key to successful disease management.

Introducing the Everwell Diagnostics Module

The Everwell Hub has implemented a comprehensive Diagnostics Module enabling the seamless creation, management, and administration of tests for patients, ensuring a prompt response to their healthcare needs. The system is built on the following principles:

  • Availability: The solution is available on multiple platforms to ensure maximum reach. These include web, android apps and tablets

  • Accessibility: The solution has different views/functionalities for different stakeholders making it useful for a large user base

  • Interoperability: The solution should be readily integrable with other existing solutions

making it useful in a wide range of contexts.

An overall illustrative workflow of the Everwell Diagnostic module is as below:

Enhanced Features for Effective Diagnosis

The Diagnostics Module in the Everwell Hub offers a comprehensive range of features designed to cover all aspects of the diagnostic process. Some of the notable features include:

  • Support for multiple diseases: With 15 different test types, the module caters to a wide range of diseases and conditions. The module also allows healthcare providers to easily add new tests to their repertoire, ensuring flexibility and adaptability to evolving diagnostic requirements.

  • Sample Tracking and QR Code Identification: The module facilitates sample registration and provides tools for their effective management throughout the testing process. Samples can be conveniently identified through QR codes, enabling quick and accurate tracking, reducing errors, and improving efficiency.

  • Comprehensive Reports: The Diagnostics Module provides insightful reports that track tests based on various parameters, including the number of transactions, geographical distribution, and test types. These reports offer valuable insights for healthcare administrators and policymakers.

  • Standardized Data Exchange Protocol: The diagnostics module adheres to the FHIR global standards and uses LOINC codes to save test requests to easily be interoperable with other Case management systems.

  • Alerts to Stakeholders: Send alerts to the stakeholders based on certain events. These events could be a test result becoming available, a sample coming close to the expiry date and so on. Alerts can be generated in the form of SMS and Push Notifications.

Integrations for Enhanced Performance

The Everwell Diagnostic module has all of its APIs exposed over a secure data gateway to enable the usage of the module in a wide variety of contexts. Integrations help in reducing the time needed to report tests and test results. Some of the integrations that are currently live are mentioned below:

  • The integration with testing Machines, such as CBNAAT and TrueNat tests, further enhances the diagnostic capabilities, allowing for rapid and reliable identification of the disease.

  • Moreover, the module is already added to the Hub Health Companion, the patient mobile application and can easily be added to other patient interfaces as well to provide the patients access to their test information

  • The Everwell Diagnostics module is classified as a Digital Public Good by the Digital Square Foundation and is able to exchange data in FHIR data packets. This allows the module to easily integrate and exchange data with other Case management systems.

Conclusion

As highlighted, Diagnostic tests form a vital part in the diagnosis and treatment of any condition thus having a robust Diagnostic module is probably the single most important module in each case management system. The Everwell Diagnostics system is designed to handle the complex diagnostic needs of public health programs throughout the world and is already deployed at scale.
