Biomimicry is defined by Janine Benyus (author of Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature) as, a new discipline that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems. Benyus explains that we can learn from the solutions already developed in the natural world to solve many of the problems we currently face today; such as energy usage, resource management, food production, structural engineering, and waste management. Learning that natural design failures are now fossils, the Pinpoint team has explored nature to discover its withstanding sustainable solutions, gaining insight into our design, engineering, and business problems. The team initially compiled a list of various problems we would face in developing and marketing our product. We then looked to nature as a guide for potential solutions, finding insight on all levels, ranging from structural design to cultural innovation. The team then divided the findings into discipline-specific components that could be further investigated and analyzed, finding a plethora of additional insight from organisms all around the globe.
